Professor at the University of Santiago de Compostela of acknowledged international prestige in human genetics. Since 1996, he has authored or co-authored more than 50 book chapters and he has published almost 200 works in high impact journals, including several Science, Nature Genetics, Nature, American Journal of Human Genetics, Genome Research, PLoS Medicine, etc; all those are related to human variation and cooperate with recognised international researchers. His research lines focus on the analysis of genetic susceptibility of complex and common diseases, rare diseases (mainly those whose origin is in mitochondrial DNA), bioinformatics and biostatistics, and forensic genetics (population substructure, interpretation of the tests, SNP, RTS, mtDNA and Y chromosome research, among others).

In recent years, hemaintains close collaboration with Prof. Federico Martinón-Torres’group GenVIP [E1] to delve into the genetic basis of complex pediatric diseases such as meningococcal disease.
